Is a Diabetes test right for you?

The glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c) test measures the amount of blood sugar (glucose) which is chemically bound to your haemoglobin in your blood. Haemoglobin is the part of your red blood cells that carries oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body. It is an important screening or monitoring blood test that gives a good indication if you are pre-diabetic, have diabetes or how well your diabetes is being controlled if you already know you have diabetes.

FAQ

Your common questions answered

The glycosylated haemoglobin test shows what a person's average blood glucose level was for the 2-3 months before the test. The red cells live for 3 months in the body from creation to destruction. This test ages the cells from the blood collection and as blood sugar is carried by these cells, the test quantifies the 3-month average. This can help determine how well a person's diabetes is being controlled over time or help identify a new case of diabetes.
You should consider this test if you are at risk of diabetes; if you want to monitor levels as you have diabetes type 1 or 2 and are following a diet, exercise or drug programme to control this; or if you have symptoms associated with diabetes.

Diabetes symptoms depend on how high your blood sugar is. Some people, especially if they have Pre-Diabetes or Type 2 Diabetes, may not have symptoms. In Type 1 Diabetes, symptoms tend to come on quickly and be more severe. The signs and symptoms of diabetes include but are not limited to the following:

  • Feel more thirsty than usual
  • Urinating often
  • Weight loss without trying
  • Presence of ketones in the urine. Ketones are a by-product of the breakdown of muscle and fat that happens when there's not enough available insulin
  • Feel tired and weak
  • Feel irritable or have other mood changes
  • Blurry vision
  • Slow-healing sores
  • Get a lot of infections, such as gum, skin, and vaginal infections
